To build a home

Markus Guschelbauer | Mixed media installation

Hallstatt’s storied past and the special topography of the place and its surroundings are the starting point for my artistic exploration. The house becomes the central element of the artistic narrative and subsequently a changeable object with a ritual-like character.
The house stands for settling down, but at the same time also for mobility, adaptability, development and change. With partly found, partly brought materials, the basic construction of the house is created away from the center of Hallstatt, in the picturesque forest of the Echern valley. Along the loudly roaring Waldbach Strub, it seeks its way out of the valley, through the village and finally across the lake to the exhibition site in Grub Castle. The path is the challenge, it demands a constant oscillation between adaptation and asserting its place. The house undergoes a transformation process, it becomes a wearable house dress becomes a houseboat becomes a malleable object.
